Boston to Belfast Youth Empowerment Program

The South Boston Leadership Initiative is now accepting applications for those wishing to participate in this year’s Boston to Belfast Youth Empowerment Program. This unique, specialized program is in collaboration with the South Boston Neighborhood House and South Boston Youth Hockey, and will mainly include a weeklong trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland during the week of Thanksgiving 2018.

Requirements for all applicants:

  • MUST be registered USA Hockey players.
  • A current and valid US passport is needed for selection.
  • Youth are expected to participate in pre-trip team building exercises, as well as educational, leadership development, and life-skills workshops which will be held periodically from September thru November.
  • Youth are expected to attend a post-trip celebratory gathering in December, which their families will also be invited to attend.
  • Youth are expected to participate in a community-builiding/social action group project in December.
  • There will be a non-refundable fee ($125) for any youth who agrees to join the program upon acceptance. It is not required to apply.
  • Any male or female between the ages of 13 and 15 are welcome to apply.
  • Preference for selection will be given to current members of South Boston Youth Hockey.

ISEE Prep

The South Boston Leadership Initiative and the South Boston Neighborhood House have partnered to offer a free ISEE Test Prep Course to be held at the Neighborhood House (136 H St). The program is open to South Boston residents and students who plan on taking the upcoming ISEE Test. Some highlights include:

 

  • Fall of 2018 (September 25th – November 1st)
  • 2 sessions per week (Tuesday and Thursday)
  • 5:00-7:00pm each night for six total weeks
  • Materials will be provided by the South Boston Leadership Initiative

 

This in-depth course, led by South Boston resident and Boston Public School teacher Shannon Moran, will help students with test strategies, problem solving, and practice exams. As a graduate of Boston Latin School, and with degrees from Boston College and Harvard, Shannon knows the importance of the ISEE Test and will be able to relate to all of the students who participate.

Summer Fitness Program

The South Boston Leadership Initiative will be hosting a  Summer Fitness Program to be held at Farragut Park (and the surrounding causeways and beach areas), and will meet every morning, Monday thru Thursday, outside of the Murphy Rink. The program is FREE and open to anyone between the ages of 12-18, and it’s in partnership with the DCR’s Save the Harbor/Save the Bay organization.  Highlights include:

 

  • 7 weeks (July 9th-August 23rd)
  • Monday through Thursday
  • Group 1: Ages 15-18 (7:30am-8:30am)
  • Group 2: Ages 12-14 (8:30am-10:00am)

 

This specialized program, led by an experienced staff, will look to use fitness and nutrition as a means of instilling healthy lifestyles to the youth in South Boston. While focusing on everything from flexibility to nutrition to sport-specific weight training, each participant will improve not just physically but mentally as well as we head into the Summer months. Farragut Park and the beachfront should provide the perfect setting to enjoy a successful Summer!

Volunteer Opportunities

If you’re looking to volunteer and give a little back to the youth of South Boston, then you’ve come to the right place.  We are currently compiling a list of potential volunteers for a Networking Seminar as well as a College Fair .  One would represent their profession at the Networking Seminar, and their college alma mater at our College Fair.

Internships – MLK Scholars

The South Boston Leadership Initiative is currently accepting applications for paid internship opportunities for the Summer of 2018.  Full time residents of Boston who are between the ages of 16 and 18 are encouraged to apply.  Students will be expected to work 20-25 hours per week for approximately seven weeks beginning on Monday July 9th.  This unique opportunity is available thanks to John Hancock’s MLK Scholars Program.
